Cooks for the Cure
Cooks for the Cure Cookbook
The Susan G. Komen Foundation was started in 1982 as a promise from one sister to another to help find a cure for Breast Cancer.
On October 19, 2004, Helen Porter Brown passed from breast cancer. A couple of months after she passed, her sister, Sheila Porter saw an ad for the inaugural Komen Tampa Bay 3-Day walk and she knew she had to participate. She spoke to her friend, Janice Cramer, and she decided to join her on the walk in honor of her mother, Louise. They also found out that Denise Watson was interested in walking for her favorite aunt, Becky, who passed from breast cancer. Another friend from work, Sherry Cochran joined us and then Denise’s friend Marlana Posavec, and Janice’s niece, Kee Kee Agudio.
So in October 2005, there were six people, standing in the pouring down rain, crying up a storm from the amazing 3-Day Opening Ceremony and knowing that their lives would never be the same – thus team “Thanks for the Mammories” was born.
That first year, the six members raised over $17,000 and the 3-Day event raised $5.4 million. Most of their feet were blistered, they were hurting in places they did not know existed and they vowed not to do this ever again.
But then they thought about the money that was raised that will fund research for a cure, will allow treatment for someone who cannot afford it, and will help to educate and possibly prevent breast cancer – not only for their family and friends, but for people around the world – and they knew that they had to walk, they had to crew and they had to support until they hear the words, “We have found a Cure for Breast Cancer.”
In 2006, the team grew to 23 walkers – 22 women and one brave man. They had a terrific year with much better weather, and their bonds grew stronger. In 2006, the team raised over $66,000! And they found that there were lots of men in their lives supporting their efforts – so much so, that they formed a whole team for them.
In 2007, the S.O.B.’s (Sons, Others, and Brothers) were formed. They were the first all-male team walking in the Tampa Bay 3-Day, and they were a real hit. By this time, the combined teams had climbed to 24 walkers. And they gained an official “crew” to help support them along the way. The 3-Day organization provides great support, but the teams found that it really helped to have their own support crew to assist with fundraising, transportation, snacks and drinks, and the occasional chair – not to mention a fresh pair of socks or an emergency supply run. In 2007 they raised over $90,000.
For 2008, Thanks for the Mammories / SOB’s have grown to 70 walkers, and a support crew of 16. Their goal is to raise $150,000 and they know they will continue to grow – continue to walk – until they hear the words: “We have found a Cure for Breast Cancer.”
