Each person is writing about their encounter with Breast Cancer to tell their story, to share some of their knowledge and experiences and to give hope and encouragement to others that they too can survive and that you are never alone in this battle!!!
From the Captain of Thanks for the Mammories Team:
MEN CAN GET BREAST CANCER!!!!!!!!!! I just want to shout that out in case there is any doubt.
At my sister’s funeral, I made sure to tell everyone there that we are basically all related, which means ALL of us have a chance of getting breast cancer. I do not think the males were listing because my cousin, Gary, was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer last year. The lump had been there for years, but he ignored it even when a doctor asked him to get examined. He blamed the lump on scar tissue from car accident because men can’t get breast cancer. Then Gary started losing A LOT of weight. Gary has always been in excellent shape – a very athletic build, but he was melting to skin and bones. His Mom, a nurse, dragged him to the ER. By the time he was diagnosed, the lump was grapefruit size. Gary was put on a very aggressive chemo schedule and I am happy to report doing very well on his treatments. They do not even feel they will have to do surgery. He is a true miracle. So please remember the motto of our Sons, Others and Brothers (The SOBs) team: Cancer is a Family Disease!!!
